Expanding Horizons: IB Pilot Discount for primary and secondary schools in Africa

Watch an enlightening webinar that delves into the innovative Discount Pilot Project for the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Africa.

*The pilot offers approximately 50% discount on the onboarding fees for any new school joining PYP or MYP programme. The pilot is currently offered in Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal and Democratic Republic of the Congo and runs until June 2025.

 

This session will feature two esteemed guest speakers who will share their firsthand experiences with implementing the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) in African schools.

  • Benson Kamau

    Dr Benson Kairu is an IB educator who over the last 25 years has played different roles and had different experiences with the IB. He has taught three IB subjects in the Diploma Programme[NG1] , coordinated the Diploma[NG2]  Programme, trained TOK teachers, examined TOK and English literature and consulted for the IB as an authorization team member. He is also a father to two IB students. He is currently IB’s Development & Recognition Manager for Africa, a role that involves sharing the message of IB education to schools and working with them through their application process to become IB World Schools.
     

  •  Dr Utheri Kanayo

    Principal/Co-founder

    Freedom International Schools- Africa

    DR UTHERI KANAYO studied Education at Undergraduate and Master's level at Kenyatta and Nairobi universities, and a PhD in Education at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, UK. She has worked as an academic researcher at The Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, and Research Manager for Camfed International, UK. She is well exposed to Africa’s educational landscape, having carried out research in nine African countries. In 2013, Utheri and her husband Kanayo quit their well-paying jobs in the UK to return to Kenya and established an NGO called Children in Freedom. They offered scholarships and mentorship to African children, encouraging them to love their African heritage, and use their talents to innovate solutions for their communities. In 2018, Utheri co-founded the first Afrocentric school in East Africa, Children In Freedom School (CIFS). In 2023, the school grew another level, The Freedom High School and was further ranked among the Top 10 best learning institutions worldwide by the T4 initiatives rankings. In June 2024, CIFS became an IB candidate school and changed its name to Freedom International School-Africa (FISA). FISA has a thriving Primary and Middle Years programme, and aims to add the Diploma Programme in due course. Utheri is also a member of council for the Open University of Kenya where she chairs the Academic, Research and Linkages committee. She is also The Special Africa Advisor for The Beacon Equity Trust, and a Metis fellow.
     

  • Angela Johnstone

Deputy Principal

Crawford International La Lucia Preparatory

Angela is a passionate inquiry-based teaching practitioner with over 36 years of experience in the field of education. Her career has taken her from the northern regions of Zululand to Crawford International La Lucia IB World School. She has served as a preparatory school teacher, teaching students ranging from Grade 4 to 7, Deputy Principal, Head of Academics and PYPC, overseeing academics from Grade 1 – 7. She is a graduate of Edgewood College of Education (UKZN) and a professional development enthusiast and lifelong learner. Being aligned with the PYP, has opened up the world of education in a way that has encouraged exponential growth her learning journey in the short time her school has been an authorized IB World School.
